Champagne of course is restricted to the Champagne region of France. And while occasionally a bottle of Dom Perignon, Veuve Clicquot or Moet et Chandon can be just what the doctor ordered, in general it's just a little bit pricey. That's where the sparkling wines come in handy, especially the Spanish cava. At the moment, a frothy bottle of Freixenet can be had at just over 1,000 yen. Try it well chilled. You'll never know the difference.

| You'll notice that the Zubrowka bottle contains a blade of grass. This is bison grass, a type of grass unique to the forests of Eastern Poland. The bison grass gives Zubrowka its special aroma and delicate flavor. At present, bison grass is classified as a narcotic in the US, so it is illegal to import Zubrowka into the United States. As with other vodkas, keep Zubrowka in the freezer and chill it till it goes syrupy. You can drink it straight or on the rocks. |

A cocktail of brandy, wine, vermouth, curacao, and others, it was also known as a "dream cocktail." Denki Bran (literally Electric Brandy) dates from the late Meiji Era. At the time, electricity was still a novelty, and "electric" product names flourished. It was immediately adopted by the cool people of the era for its modern taste and image.
